These three apps are often compared because they all start from a birth moment and then go in different directions. None of them is a failed version of the others. The useful question is which job you actually want done.

The options, with tradeoffs

1. Co-Star — A phone app built around a natal from your birth data, then a social daily feed and friend comparisons.
   Good for: A push-notification habit and a chart you can share with people already on the app.
   Tradeoff: You need an app-store login, and the product is daily weather more than a traditional house-cusp wheel you can sit with as a student.

3. Sanctuary — A marketplace app for live chat with astrologers, tarot readers, and psychics, plus daily horoscopes on the phone.
   Good for: A conversation with a human when the question is timely and you want someone on the other end of the chat.
   Tradeoff: The product is coach chat billed by the minute, not a self-serve calculator. You do not leave with a documented engine you can re-run yourself.
4. Charting Stars — A browser observatory: enter birth date, time, and place and get a free Big 3 — Sun, Moon, and Rising — with no account required.
   Good for: A timezone-correct natal from VSOP87 positions and IANA historical zones, then an optional paid Hellenistic reading for the rest of the wheel.
   Tradeoff: There is no social graph and no live astrologer chat. The free preview is the Big 3, not the full planet/house/aspect tables; those ship with a paid reading.
5. Astro.com (Astrodienst) — The long-running web chart service from the people behind the Swiss Ephemeris, with many house systems and free wheels.
   Good for: Students who want a serious natal drawing and optional human-written reports, without installing a phone app.
   Tradeoff: The interface is older than Co-Star or The Pattern, and it will not send you a social daily or pair you with a coach.

How to choose

Pick Co-Star if the job is a social daily on your phone. Pick The Pattern if the job is relationship psychology in plain language. Pick Sanctuary if the job is a live reader in chat.

Pick Charting Stars if the job is a self-serve natal in the browser — VSOP87 positions, IANA timezones, no account to generate the Big 3 — and you may later want a written reading from that same birth moment.

Pick Astro.com if the job is a student-grade wheel and you already know which house system you want. CHANI is another real daily-ritual app in this neighborhood; it is closer to Co-Star’s habit than to a calculator.
